Fantastic Mr. Fox free essay sample
Fantastic Mr. Fox, a PG rated film, is designed for children. However, further review prompts more investigation into its suitability to children because of its adult-level violence and crafty banter. The number of parents who do not let their children watch this movie is substantial. The beginning of the movie is much like a love story, or so one would think. Mr. and Mrs. Fox prepare to steal chickens from a nearby farmer. To a parent, this scene would make it appear to a child that stealing is okay. Whatever age the child is at, he or she is always learning. Using the simplest swear word, mistake or character flaw could potentially translate in that childs behavior. In child psychology, children often repeat behaviors or word patterns that are most appealing to them. If this movie is appealing to a child, he or she uses the implications that are unsatisfactory to the parent. We will write a custom essay sample on Fantastic Mr. Fox or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The movie focuses on an impoverished Mr. Fox, who visits a banker in order to afford buying a new tree. While the characters are arguing, they use the word cuss instead of swearing. All movies are given a rating by the Motion Picture Association of America, however, the rating PG means parental guidance. This means that children who watch this film need to have parental guidance to explain nuances that occur. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The fact that they use cuss words in Fantastic Mr. Fox to prove a point is inappropriate. The rating PG should be because of a bad scene or two, but definitely not cuss words, stealing and fighting. This is why Fantastic Mr. Fox is not appropriate for children. A good wholesome childrens movie is one that nas a good meaning, an age appropriate story line and does not have the need to swear or cuss. Any child that watches this movie may tart saying cuss when they get angry, because they learned it from this movie when Fox was angry. If you are a parent and you are trying your hardest to teach your kid good morals, respect and manners, why would want them to watch a movie where it will be counterproductive to your parenting. Further into the movie Mr. Fox has a mid- life crisis and starts stealing again without telling his wife. This movie is showing kids that stealing other peoples property is accepted, as well as lying to your loved ones. This, in fact, is wrong. You are saying that using someone elses property that they have worked for, and in turn, sing it to benefit yourself is permitted. There is a reason why, as adults, we get Jobs and become responsible. We make money to buy our own provisions to provide for our families. It is exactly what we should be teaching our kids, and not what this movie is teaching. If you were to make this movie your guidelines for your life, you would either end up in Jail, or a correctional facility. You could end up living a very lonely life. A lonely life is exactly what the characters son has. Ash is very different from all the other characters, which allows him to be picked on easily. Even though Ash tries to fit in, he is excluded everywhere- even at home. He never gets the love and attention a son should get from his father. Ash is rejected at home, school and with his friends. The entire movie, he tries to get his father to notice him, whether its good or bad attention. Additionally, Mr. Fantastic is rejecting his own son because hes too different. If you are a parent you love your kids no matter how different they are, what they look like or even if they act a little immature. While this goes on, you also have the death of the rat. If you are going to have eaths censor them. There is no need to show this character getting electrocuted. This could potentially traumatize your child or possibly affect how your child sleeps at night by giving them nightmares. For most children a gruesome death like this one could possibly alter how they grow up and look at life. As children grow up they should be exposed to age appropriate movies. Andersons Fantastic Mr. Fox is not a child friendly movie. Along with all of the vulgar humor, lying, stealing and neglect; what is wrong with todays society and believing that this is acceptable behavior to teach our children.

Viking Longships Essays
Viking Longships Essays Viking Longships Paper Viking Longships Paper The Vikings are peoples that were originally from Scandinavia. Scandinavia is now Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. From the eight to the eleventh century, these people originally referred to as Norsemen began to raid places in Europe and other countries they became referred to as Vikings. The name Viking, originates from the place Viken in the Oslofjord. The Oslofjord is a bay south-east of Norway. Vikings are known for plundering from other societies. They are usually shown that the whole Viking nation went out to help on these raids but, they were done mostly independent by chieftains that obtained men who were willing to aid and longships. Viking Longships are the warships of the Vikings. These ships were used mostly for raids because of their ability to travel swiftly in coastal waters, open waters, rivers, and estuaries and travel long distances. The Longships are usually in between twenty to thirty-five meters long. The largest Longship discovered was at Roskilde Harbor, which is in Demark, and it was 35 meters in length. It had the capacity to carry 72 oars and a crew of 100 men. Tree- ring analysis places this ship to be created around 1025 A. D. The Longships usually carried between twenty to sixty Viking warriors. The ship was also big enough for all the equipment that the Vikings had to transport, and the loot that they plundered. These Longships were light-weight and strong. They were created with a square sail. The square sails were made of woven wool. The sail could be pulled down over the crew to protect them during rough storms. The sail is what allowed the Longship to sail so quickly throughout rough seas and other waters. The sail in combination with the oars allowed for the Vikings to sail through open oceans straight through and then switch to using the oars when they were near attacks. The Longships also featured a shallow hull that allows the ship to sail up onto the beach or sail through rivers. This also aided with raiding villages that have centers on the river. Craftsmen in that time would create the boat differently by first splitting an oak treeââ¬â¢s trunk into long, thin planks. The craftsmen attached the boards together with iron nails then to a single sturdy keel and then to each other, with one board overlapping another. The Vikings used this clinker technique as opposed to the more used method of building the skeleton of the hull first. Craftsmen then spaced the floor timbers to the keel of the boat and not the hull. This created flexibility, speed, maneuverability within the boat. Modern replicas of Viking Longships have reached up to fourteen knots and could be closely compared to the speed of modern sailboats. Viking Longships were basically without any civilized religion and their ships often were created with a dragons head on the bow of the ship to protect them from evil sea spirits. The Longship was a great advantage to the Vikings. When a chief or leader died, the Longship was sometimes buried in the grave with the leader or chief. The Vikings believed that this practice would help the dead chief or leader quickly sail to Valhalla. Some dead Viking warriors were placed in their ships when they passed away. The ship would then be set on fire and they would sail away slowly. The Viking Longships basically created the Viking Age, from eight hundred to eleven hundred A. D. A misconception about this period is that the Vikings were the only group of uncivilized people who were running about plundering societies, but in actuality this was just a time where this was almost normal. There were more groups than just the Vikings plundering societies but, the Vikings were just the best at doing it. The model of the Longship paved the way for other models of ships. The Vikings pretty much had a sort of new technology. Citations: (THE VIKINGS) (Hauge, 2002) (Fitzhugh, 2005)

Complete List Open Admission Colleges With 100% Admission
Complete List Open Admission Colleges With 100% Admission SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If youââ¬â¢re worried about getting into college, we're here with some news that may ease your mind: There are open admission colleges (aka open enrollment colleges), colleges that offer admission to all students provided that they have a high school diploma or GED. Regardless of your GPA or standardized test scores, you can have the opportunity to pursue a college degree at one of these schools. In this article, we'll define open admission colleges, explain the pros and cons of attending a college with open admissions, and provide you with a list of four-year colleges with a 100% acceptance rate. What Is an Open Admission College? Open admission, or open enrollment, means that everybody who has a high school diploma or GED can attend. Nobody is rejected. Open admission schools have an acceptance rate of 100%. Generally, you donââ¬â¢t have to take the SAT or ACT to be admitted, but many open admission colleges require placement tests. Types of Colleges That Are Open Admission There are public, private independent, private liberal arts, and private religious colleges that are open admission. Examples of public open admission colleges include UTEP, Metropolitan State, and Weber State. The University of Pikeville is an open admission liberal arts college. Arlington Baptist College and Jarvis Christian College are open admission religious colleges. Also, some colleges with open enrollment, including Baker College and Dixie State University offer both associate (2-year) and bachelor's (4-year) degrees. Furthermore, some open admission universities offer distance or online education. The majority of community colleges are open admission. At a community college, you can get a trade certificate, an associate degree, or transfer to a 4-year college to get your bachelor's degree. Community Colleges (2-Year) vs. Open Admission Colleges (4-Year) Although most community colleges and all 4-year open admission universities accept anyone who applies, there are still some major differences between the two types of programs. Most importantly, the bachelorââ¬â¢s degree you receive from a 4-year college is a more advanced degree and will provide more job opportunities than the associate degree you receive from a 2-year college. Nonetheless, each type of school has its own benefits. Let's go through them. Benefits of Attending a Community College Even though 4-year colleges tend to be more highly regarded than community colleges, community colleges do offer some advantages. Lower Cost Most community colleges are a fraction of the price of 4-year colleges.According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average cost of tuition and fees for 2018/2019 at a two-year school was only $3,660, just over one-third of the cost for a year at a four-year public institution. You Can Transfer to a Four-Year College Community colleges offer you the opportunity to transfer to a 4-year college and get a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. In fact, many public 4-year colleges offer guaranteed admission to in-state community college students if they fulfill certain requirements. Some of my former students attended community college and were able to transfer to prestigious colleges like UC-Berkeley and UCSD. Many Community Colleges Offer Certificates in Specific Trades Whereas 4-year colleges tend to offer degrees in more academic or scholarly fields, most community colleges offer certificates in trades that directly lead to employment. The majority of certificate programs can be completed in less than a year. Common certificate fields of study include health care, cosmetology, auto mechanics, and computer and information services. You can get a cosmetology certificate at a community college. (COD Newsroom/Flickr) Benefits of Attending a Four-Year College Besides the increased opportunities and higher income you're likely to receive if you get a bachelor's degree vs. an associate degree, there are additional benefits of attending a 4-year college right out of high school. You're More Likely To Get a Bachelor's Degree Students are more likely to get a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree if they start their post-high school education at a 4-year college. In my experience, only the most motivated students who attended community college ended up transferring and receiving bachelorââ¬â¢s degrees. While everyone at a 4-year college is pursuing a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree, many community college students arenââ¬â¢t. You have to be more driven and fulfill all the necessary requirements to transfer to a 4-year college. Better Social Life Four-year colleges tend to offer better social lives for their students. Many community college students only spend time on campus when theyââ¬â¢re in class. The average age of community college students is older; there are many part-time students and older people who are trying to continue their educations. At four-year colleges, even those where the majority of students donââ¬â¢t live on campus, there are usually more extracurricular activities and out-of-class interaction between students. Takes Less Time To Get a Bachelor's Degree On average, it takes longer for a community college student to receive a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree than it does for a student who starts at a 4-year college. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average time it takes to complete a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree is: 71 months for students who begin at 2â⬠year colleges 55 months for students who begin at 4-year public colleges 50 months for students who begin at 4-year private colleges The lower cost of community colleges mightbe offset by the additional time it could take to receive a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. Open Admission vs. More Selective Colleges You may end up deciding between an open enrollment college and a more selective college when you're making your college decision. I'll break down the advantages of each type of institution. Benefits of Open Admission Colleges Because of the lower admission requirements at colleges with open admissions, it may be easier to excel in more demanding subjects at an open admission college because youââ¬â¢re likely competing with fewer gifted students, and you may be able to maintain a higher GPA. A higher college GPA can increase your chances of gaining admission to graduate or professional schools and getting certain jobs after you graduate from college. Also, the cost of open admission colleges, especially public open admission colleges, is usually lower than those of more selective institutions. Even when comparing private colleges, colleges with open enrollment tend to be cheaper than more selective schools. The tuition and fees for Jarvis Christian College, a private Christian college with open enrollment in Hawkins, Texas is $,720. That's significantly cheaper than the $48,330 tuition and fees for Rice University, a selective private school in Houston, Texas. For comparison, the tuition and fees for Texas AM, a public university, is $,036 for in-state students and $31,214 for out-of-state students. Lastly, open admission colleges offer you the opportunity to be around more diverse types of students. Open enrollment colleges typically enroll many more older students and part-time students who might have full-time jobs or families. More selective colleges tend to be composed mostly of students who did well in high school and attended college right after graduating high school. Part of the education you receive in college comes from being around different types of people who have different backgrounds and perspectives. You can save money by attending an open admission college. (Images Money/Flickr) Benefits of More Selective Colleges Often, schools are judged based on their acceptance rates. Schools with higher acceptance rates tend to have worse reputations than more selective colleges. While you can accomplish your academic and professional goals by studying at any college, it can be more difficult to get certain jobs or admitted to more selective graduate school programs from a less prestigious university. More selective colleges often have a higher caliber of student. In college, you learn from and are inspired by your peers. More selective schools have a greater percentage of driven students with advanced academic skills. Lastly, more selective schools typically have more resources. Because they have more resources, more selective schools often have better dorms, academic facilities, and more prestigious professors. List of Open Admission Colleges All of the colleges on the list are 4-year colleges with 100% acceptance rates. I put the public colleges are in bold. Besides these colleges, there are a number of colleges that are close to open admission. They have acceptance rates of between 97% and 99.9%. Assuming you meet minimum requirements, youââ¬â¢ll almost definitely gain admission. Check out our list of schools with the highest acceptance rates. Some seminaries and schools of religious teaching, like yeshivas and rabbinical colleges, are also open admission, but I didn't include them in this list. Extended Families Essay -- Television Media TV
Extended Families The evolution of extended families has progressed far from the early black and white episodes of The Addams Family, to the country life of The Waltons, and to the crazy lives of the family in Full House. It is clear that the changes in the portrayals of families provide audience members with a picture of families being more complex if nothing else (Bryant, 2001). Therefore, it is certain that each decade has surpassed the other in its growth and development of extended families. The 1960s series The Addams Family showed a very good example of an extended family. The extended family included Gomez Addams (an eccentric cigar-smoking millionaire lawyer), Morticia (his slender wife), Pugsley (their son), Wednesday (their little girl), Grandmama Addams, Uncle Fester, Cousin It, and Lurch (the familyââ¬â¢s zombie butler). Other people residing in the household included Thing (a disembodied hand), Kit Kat (a cowardly lion), and Cleopatra (an African strangling plant). These are all different members of one big family that have come to live together to be a perf... Levis Strauss & Co. an Analysis
Levi Strauss & Co. An Analysis EEP 142 Group Project Young Lee James Moon Michael Lin Problem â⬠¢The Levi Strauss company is experiencing losses and is continuing to under-perform in the denim jean market. â⬠¢The firm faces the general problem of a dominant firm losing market share when more firms enter the market. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Background ââ¬â History â⬠¢The company was founded by Levi Strauss in 1853 primarily selling wholesale dry goods. The company was founded in San Francisco, California. A tailor named Jacob Davis thought of an idea to use copper rivets to reinforce the points of strain on pants. â⬠¢Davis and Strauss purchased the patent of the idea of using copper rivets in clothing on May 20, 1873. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Background ââ¬â Company Growth â⬠¢The innovation of the rivets in the jeans differentiated Leviââ¬â¢s j eans from others because of its increased durability. â⬠¢Over the years, Leviââ¬â¢s jeans have become more popular, initially due to its durability. Jean products expanded, targeting different consumers. Levi Strauss & Co. eventually captures most of the denim jean market, becomes the largest manufacturer of jeans, and profits reach $1 billion by 1974. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Background ââ¬â Time Line â⬠¢1853: Levi Strauss begins selling dry goods in San Francisco. â⬠¢1873: Levi Strauss & Co. patent riveted jeans and begin selling them. â⬠¢1912: Koveralls, denim playsuit for children, is first nationally sold product for the company. â⬠¢1935: Company sells first blue jeans for women. â⬠¢1940s: U. S. overnment issues denim work clothes for employees in the defense industry. â⬠¢1974: Company sales reach $1 billion â⬠¢1986: Company introduces Dockers as a new casual line of clothes Problem B ackground Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Successes ââ¬â Monopoly â⬠¢Since the patent of the rivets in jeans in 1873, the company achieved monopoly power. â⬠¢Monopoly power was gained through entry barriers. ââ¬âThe patent granted the firm monopoly rights to sell riveted jeans. â⬠¢Also by product differentiation ââ¬âThe rivets on the jeans allowed for longer durability, a form of vertical differentiation. Product differentiation and barriers to entry allowed the company to gain more popularity and market share. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Successes ââ¬â Expansion â⬠¢By 1977, Levi Strauss & Co. is the worldââ¬â¢s largest jean manufacturer. â⬠¢Department stores and boutiques sell Leviââ¬â¢s products and are additional channels of distribution for the company. â⬠¢Leviââ¬â¢s provides a wide range of products that target different market segments, capturing demands. â⬠¢After the release of the 501 product line, Leviââ¬â¢s enjoys worldwide market dominance in the denim jean market. Levi Strauss & Co. maintains itââ¬â¢s image as an American Icon and the originator of American jeans. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Successes ââ¬â Positioning â⬠¢Other marketing strategies, like the position of the product, created increased differentiation, contributing to the companies market power. â⬠¢In 1930s, the company survived the Great Depression due to increased interest in Western culture. ââ¬âJeans were positioned as being worn by ââ¬Å"cowboys. â⬠cowboys. â⬠â⬠¢Leviââ¬â¢s jeans were issued to employees in the defense industry (including veterans) during World War II. Post World War II, veterans that went to college wore Leviââ¬â¢s jeans on Leviââ¬â¢ campuses, increasing popularity. â⬠¢WWII veterans were regarded as heroes. ââ¬âJeans were shown to be suitable for casual wear, rather than work. work. ââ¬âDuring the Baby Boom era, Leviââ¬â¢s targets younger consumers and Leviââ¬â¢ positions product as ââ¬Å"cool. â⬠cool. â⬠â⬠¢Early movie stars wore Leviââ¬â¢s jeans. An example of celebrity endorsement Leviââ¬â¢ â⬠¢Consumer demand shifts from durability of jeans to fashion of jeans. ââ¬âCulturally, jeans became symbol of youth and rebellion In 1960s, student protesters wore jeans as a uniform â⬠¢In 1970s, company sells bellbottom jeans â⬠¢ The firm positioned its products with changing times and changing demands, keeping existing customers and capturing new markets. Increases in sales ultimately increased profits Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Competition ââ¬â Effect â⬠¢Levi Strauss & Co. was threatened by competition, because barriers of entry were relatively low in the jean market. (excluding the patent) â⬠¢S ome of Leviââ¬â¢s competitors include: ââ¬âCalvin Klein ââ¬âGap Jeans ââ¬âVF Corp (Lee, Wrangler) ââ¬âTommy Hilfiger The entrance of new competitors had many effects on Leviââ¬â¢s. ââ¬âLeviââ¬â¢s no longer has monopoly power more competitive prices Leviââ¬â¢ lower profits ââ¬âAvailability of substitutes firm faces increase in elasticity of demand ââ¬âConsumers prefer other brands. Leviââ¬â¢s customers buy from competition Leviââ¬â¢ lowering Leviââ¬â¢s market share. Leviââ¬â¢ â⬠¢These newer upstarts are able to ââ¬Å"chip awayâ⬠at Leviââ¬â¢s market dominance because they are able to capture segments. ââ¬âVF Corp captures low-end jean consumers; Calvin Klein captures highlowhighend consumers. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Competition ââ¬â Strategies â⬠¢Competitors successfully were able to take from Leviââ¬â¢s market due to heavy advertising and branding. Branding was especially effective for companies like Calvin Klein that targeted high-end consumers. â⬠¢Some of the marketing strategies that competitors like Calvin Klein used to differentiate their product and brand included: ââ¬âCelebrity endorsements (Calvin Klein and Brooke Shields) ââ¬âUp-to-date European product designs (low-rise, tighter) Up- to(lowââ¬âAdvertise jeans as ââ¬Å"designer. designer. â⬠â⬠¢These advertisements were used as a barrier to entry, because of spurious product differentiation. Although Leviââ¬â¢s jeans may be physically the same as its competitorââ¬â¢s, consumer preferences are affected by brand name. â⬠¢In addition to the idea of branding, Leviââ¬â¢s largest consumer market were Baby Boomers , and by the time competitors increased in the 1980s, the Leviââ¬â¢s brand was perceived to be ââ¬Å"mommy jeans. â⬠This reinforced the more youthful perception of other brands. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Competition Premium Jeans â⬠¢Leviââ¬â¢s failed to recognize and enter a new and booming premium jeans market, originating in 2000 and led by brands such as Seven For All Mankind, True Religion, and Rock & Republic. â⬠¢Levi executives themselves admitted failing to see the premium jeans trend, and the company was forced into radical cost-cutting, closing dozens of factories and laying off thousands of workers. â⬠¢The premium jeans market has over the last five years largely driven the growth of an otherwise stable jeans market, as premium jeans sales grew at a 40-45% rate for multiple years. Leviââ¬â¢s failure to adequately respond to this trend was a large part of its posting declining sales in nine out of ten years prior to 2007. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Solutions ââ¬â Advertising â⬠¢With the rise of competitors and decrease in brand image, Levi Strauss & Co. makes use of edgy advertisements. â⬠¢Brand Loyalty ââ¬âMany of Leviââ¬â¢s ads stress brand loyalty to maintain existing customers. Leviââ¬â¢ The word ââ¬Å"originalâ⬠is used many times. originalâ⬠ââ¬âSome tv ads are set in the late 1800s, stressing the historic value of the company. Brand Image ââ¬âAt the same time, Leviââ¬â¢s ads stress the ââ¬Å"youthfulnessâ⬠of their brand Leviââ¬â¢ youthfulnessâ⬠jeans. ââ¬âThe 501 product line and the Red Tab collections offer jeans that appeal that to younger consumers competing with the high-end jean competitors. highââ¬âTelevision advertisements a re more innovative and target younger crowds. ââ¬âhttp://www. youtube. com/watch? v=CSG807d3P-U http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=CSG807d3Pââ¬âhttp://www. youtube. com/watch? v=skWFyop_pxU&feature=related ââ¬âhttp://www. youtube. com/watch? v=W-SZN1VRIl4&feature=related http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=W- These marketing strategies however did not help with the worldwide decrease demand for jeans. This implies that other clothing is becoming a substitutable good for jeans. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Solutions ââ¬â Alternative â⬠¢Although Levi Strauss & Co. had worldwide market dominance in the 1980s after the release of 501 product line, profits continue to plummet due to: (1) decrease of demand for jean products and (2) more competition. â⬠¢In 1996, revenues were reported at $7. 6 billion and a U. S. market share of 18. 7%. By 2001 revenues drop to $4. 5 billion and U. S. market share of 12. 1%. â⬠¢I n order to maintain revenues, the company releases the Leviââ¬â¢s signature jeans. ââ¬âThis product line appeals to the low-end consumers. ââ¬âDecrease in demand for jeans causes market price to drop, so consumers want cheaper jeans. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Solutions ââ¬â Alternative (cont. ) â⬠¢In 2002 Levi Strauss & Co. makes an agreement with largest retailer Wal-Mart as a supply-chain strategy to massmarket consumers. ââ¬âLeviââ¬â¢s Signature brand to be sold in Wal-Mart stores exclusively This was an excellent strategic move because Wal-Mart was making large sales while Leviââ¬â¢s could not keep up in sales. This had potential to benefit both parties. ââ¬âBy 2002, Wal-Mart was #1 in the Fortune 500 rating. ââ¬âLevi Strauss & Co. was ranked #383 in 2002. â⬠¢Although this partnership was a success, Levi Strauss could not offset the slowdown in the aggregate denim jean market, continu ing to loss profits. ââ¬â2008 Rating for Leviââ¬â¢s: 522 from previous 510 ââ¬âProfits continue to fall. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Solutions ââ¬â Alternative (cont. ) Forced to re-evaluate itself by years of declining sales, Leviââ¬â¢s has been able to find some degree of success with primarily the introduction of the Signature line and a largescale streamlining of costs and itââ¬â¢s business. Leviââ¬â¢s is also being helped by its international presence and is currently being benefited by impacts from the global currency exchange market, as the company benefited from the weak dollar. â⬠¢The company is still trying to find a way into the lucrative premium jeans market, introducing a new premium line and hiring famous artists to liven up the brand. Competitor VF Corp. ecided to purchase Seven For All Mankind as their market entry. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclu sion Q&A Responsibility ââ¬â Background â⬠¢Levi Strauss & Co. is a family owned worldwide corporation with headquarters in North America, Europe, and Asia. ââ¬âThe company is vertically integrated, meaning it owns/has owned factories for every level of production for the jeans. ââ¬âThe company employs about 10,000 people worldwide. â⬠¢Historically Levi Strauss & Co. is recognized as a caring and corporately responsible company. ââ¬âAfter the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, he company continued to pay workers as it was rebuilding factories and buildings. ââ¬âDuring the Great Depression, the company kept workers busy installing new floors in factories rather than fire them. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Responsibility ââ¬â Background (cont. ) â⬠¢Levi Strauss & Co. has also taken the lead on social issues. ââ¬âDuring the 1940s, the company desegregated its factories bringing white and black worker s together. ââ¬âIn 1980s, the company was very involved in educating people about AIDS providing $37 million to HIV/AIDS services. One of the first companies to extend healthcare to their workersââ¬â¢ spouses. â⬠¢Levi Strauss & Company approach to business: ââ¬Å"profits through principles. â⬠ââ¬ââ⬠As business leaders we have the obligation, both individually and collectively, to make our enterprise not only a source for economic wealth, but also a force for positive social change in the conduct of our business. This principle of responsible commercial success is embedded in our more than 150-year experience, and continues to anchor how we operate today. â⬠Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Responsibility ââ¬â Sweatshops â⬠¢With increased competition from other jean producers in the 1980s and 90s, like any profit-maximizing corporation, Levi Strauss & Company closed many factories and subcontracted production. ââ¬âSubcontracted production is cost-minimizing because labor is relatively abundant and wages cheaper. ââ¬âIn order to compete with prices, subcontracting work makes sense. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Responsibility ââ¬â Sweatshops (cont. ) â⬠¢The company had 6 subsidiary factories in Saipan, capital of the U. S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. ââ¬âThe U. S. Department of Labor cited that workers were paid sub-minimal wages, 7 day work weeks with 12-hour shifts in ââ¬Å"slave-likeâ⬠conditions. â⬠¢The subcontractor, Tan Holdings Corporation, had to pay a fine of of $9 million as restitution to 1,200 employees. â⬠¢Levi Strauss & Co. claimed no knowledge of the offense, cut-off cutties to Tan Holdings, and issued labor reforms. â⬠¢1999, Sweatshop Watch, Global Exchange, Asian Law Caucus, Unite, and workers filed a class-action lawsuit 3 times to 27 U. S. retailers, including Levi Strauss & Co. Levi Strauss was the only defendant to win the case. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Responsibility ââ¬â Environmental â⬠¢Continuing on the approach of ââ¬Å"profits by principles,â⬠in 2006 Levi Strauss & Co. launches the Eco clothing line. ââ¬âJeans are certified to be made from 100% organic cotton and fully sustainable production processes. This includes cotton untreated by chemicals, pesticides, and manufactured at sustainable carbon emissions. ââ¬âThe jeans are also packed in 100% recyclable and reusable materials. â⬠¢Economic implications Organic jeans are more expensive, due to the added costs to certify these genes to organic standards. ââ¬âHowever, discouraging the use of chemicals for cotton is a step toward the right direction. Pesticides have externality costs to the environment and workers, because they are mostly improperly used in poor countries. A reduction in externalities improves social welfare. ââ¬âIn the long-run, sustainable production has the possibility to being profitable. ââ¬âCorporate responsibility also has long-run profits. Problem Background Successes Competition Solutions Responsibility Conclusion Q&A Conclusion â⬠¢Levi Strauss & Company had most of its early success because the firm was behaving monopolistically. The company patented the riveted jeans, increasing durability, and gaining popularity. â⬠¢Over the years, the company maintained profits by providing a wide range of products, capturing new markets, and increasing its market shares. The company created barriers to entry by patents and trademarks, and by differentiating its product from generic jeans. â⬠¢However as more firms entered the market, the company started losing customers and incurring losses. The upstart companies captured niche market shares from Leviââ¬â¢s immense market domination. â⬠¢Despite these reduction of sales, Levi Strauss & Co. maintained its corporate responsible image and progressive stance on social, labor, and environmental issues, which may have long-run profit opportunities.
